Gamelan Sekar Jaya

Hailed by Indonesia’s Tempo magazine as “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia”, GSJ celebrates 40 years of excellence with an afternoon performance featuring eight Balinese performing artists.

Under the guest artistic direction of I Wayan Dibia and music direction of co-founder I Wayan Suweca, and featuring guest music director I Dewa Putu Berata, the concert will showcase all four of Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s gamelan ensembles—the joyful bamboo jegog tingklik ensemble, the virtuosic gender wayang, the shimmering bronze angklung orchestra, and the impressive gong kebyar ensemble. In all, eight Balinese artists including renowned guest performers I Nyoman Windha and I Gusti Agung Ayu Warsiki will perform among GSJ’s 75+ musicians and dancers from the ranks of current and past members.

The concert program itself plays out like a narrative of the group’s history, with pieces old and new, traditional and contemporary. The performance will feature the world premiere of I Wayan Dibia’s dance drama, “The Story of Kecak from Bedulu”, and a new tradition-imbued instrumental work by I Wayan Suweca, among other stunning dance and musical repertoire.

GSJ has collaborated with The Residents, Pandit Chitresh Das, Shadowlight Productions and Clubfoot Orchestra, and has performed throughout California, the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Indonesia, in venues ranging from the Hollywood Bowl to village squares in remote parts of Bali.
