After the conversation, Rex will remain for a book signing, giving attendees the opportunity to meet him personally and have their copies signed.
Merlot vs. Pinot: The Sideways Showdown
Saturday, May 16, 2026 | 3:30PM - 5:00PM
Limited to 50 Guests | $80 per person (fundraiser)
Inspired by Sideways, this guided tasting transforms the film’s infamous Merlot versus Pinot debate into a joyful, high energy wine experience. Part education, part friendly rivalry, part community celebration.
Led by wine ambassadors from two sister wineries, guests will taste three expressive Pinot Noirs, exploring how vineyard and terroir shape this beloved grape, then move into three distinctive Merlots that challenge assumptions and surprise the palate. Each wine will be thoughtfully paired with food, revealing how flavor evolves and deepens with every bite.
Representing Pinot Noir is MacRostie Winery, a celebrated Russian River Valley producer known for elegant, site-driven wines that capture the nuance of Sonoma’s premier cool-climate vineyards. Championing Merlot is Markham Vineyards, a historic Napa Valley estate and early pioneer of the varietal, recognized as one of the first wineries to elevate Merlot in the region.
Each vineyard will share the story behind their award-winning wines, offering insight into the craftsmanship, history, and recognition that have earned them acclaim.
Guests will have the opportunity to revisit their favorites before making a final choice. The goal is not to declare a winner, but to spark discovery and celebrate personal taste.
Expect storytelling, laughter, lively debate, and the chance to become a bit of a backdoor sommelier, learning the language of wine in a setting that is welcoming, spirited, and deliciously fun. And you may go home feeling like a bit of a wine expert.
