Combo Tezeta
Musical Guest
Based out of the Bay Area, Combo Tezeta plays a highly danceable blend of instrumental Cumbias, Chichas, and Musica Tropical inspired by the late 60's and early 70's era of psychedelic Peru. Layering the reverb-fueled sounds of surf rock onto the foundations of Cumbia, the band's focus is to highlight the rich melodies and hypnotic rhythms birthed from the Afro-Latin diaspora. Along with its appreciation of world music and its diverse cultures, Combo Tezeta's mission is to deliver the sounds and musical echoes of the past to the present through a combination of traditional and original music.
Combo Tezeta have been bringing the vibe to many Bay Area’s music venues including The Chapel, The Brick and Mortar, The Sweetwater, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fest in Golden Gate Park, The Ivy Room, Eli’s Mile High club and in April this year the Great American Music Hall. They also toured up and down the West Coast playing clubs and festivals, most memorably with Satan’s Pilgrim and Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini in 2023. Also of note was opening for the huge show put on by Noisepop in G.G.Park, featuring Thundercat and Lee Fields and the Expressions.
In 2018 Combo Tezeta released their debut 7" vinyl record, "La Danza Del Camaleón" which sold out and is newly reissued by Nu-Tone records. The title track, an instrumental cumbia-salsera takes you on a tropical trip with a touch of psychedelia, and the flip side, a dark mid-tempo bolero called, "La Reina Nocturna."
In November 2024 they released their 2nd single on San Francisco’s Discodelic record label Ritmo Interestelar w/ Cóndores al Viento. The video for the single’s ‘A’ side song - Ritmo Interestelar - was chosen by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts to be one of 20 finalists (out of 7000) , and featured them in the Northern California showcase of finalists at Lagunitas Brewery in June of 2024
Combo Tezeta have been featured regularly in S.F.’s 48 Hills news and culture blog ,and were interviewed on KQED radio as well.
2025 is already taking shape with the great honor of supporting Los Mirlos at Great American Music Hall in April, and playing the S.F. Carnaval in May, along with lots of local shows.
“Oakland seven-piece Combo Tezeta kicked off the baile with a garage-band take on ’60s and ’70s classics and originals, with distorted guitars and jangly synths layering psychedelic ooze onto timbales and güiras. The musician’s solos revealed hard-won skills, but the band members looked remarkably chill as they played together fluidly.” – KQED
